Homeschooling So Far!

Hi! My name is Alishia and I am a KraftaholicMommy!

A little while back, I had made a post on this site about homeschooling my little man. Yesterday was that first day. It started off a bit rocky. Monkey thought that homeschooling meant he was going to be on vacation all the time…LOL! After I put my Mommy voice on and told him how it was going to be, we were able to move right in to the first class.

I have him in a virtual school, that means that everything is uploaded online. We have monthly call meetings with his teacher to ensure that Monkey is staying on pace and that he is benefitting from the program.

Now, for the funny part. We got to work that morning on Language Arts. I had a bit of a hard time with finding the calendar that shows exactly what he is supposed to be doing for the day. So, I got him started on the lesson and before I knew it we had been working for three hours! I started wondering how much of the module we were suppose to do. So, I log on to the parents portal and finally find the lesson plans for the week. We had been working this whole time, we completed all of his Language Arts lessons for the whole week!! I was kind of nervous about this.

Thankfully, his teacher called me that day to give a bit of an introduction and to talk with Monkey about what to expect from school. I brought up our mistake that morning and she told me some amazing news. When it comes to the lesson plans for the week, that is just the work that needs to be done. How we accomplish that is completely up to us. So, going through each with focusing on a single subject a day, really helps my munchkin. Other kids may need to focus only in little spurts on each subject. Either way, work is still getting done and Monkey could not be happier with his current grade.

I went in to the first day knowing that this was going to be an interesting experience. I knew that he was going to need a bit of convincing and nearly me going insane for him to realize that this really is school and that he needs to take that seriously. We have been talking about this and he knew that he was going to be going to school online, but I think he had it in his mind that it was a vacation.

I drew that conclusion when I woke up at 7:45am, because he had shut the alarm off. When I asked him why he shut it off, he told me that we could start class whenever we wanted. Which, yes, I know is true. We are not held to a set time as far as school being from 8am-3pm. However, I want, no, I NEED a schedule. I also know that Monkey needs a schedule. So, I thought since we have the ability to add a few things in to really help him with focus and learning, I wanted to start the day off bright and early!

So, with my first couple of days under my belt, what advice can I give parents that are gearing up for homeschooling? I would suggest talking about homeschooling often with your little one. If you are a stay at home parent doing this, take the week before you get started and implement that schedule. You obviously aren’t going to be teaching lessons, but do things during that class time to show them how their days will be changing. I would set up a section of the house that is just for schoolwork. Make sure you have more supplies than requested by the teacher. If they just have a list of supplies and no number, go for two of everything and three packs of pencils. You will go through them the most.

The absolute most important thing I can give as advice is; HAVE FUN!! If your little sees that you are having fun, they are going to have fun as well. They are going to see that and they are going to mimic that. The more fun you have with it the better. The more effort you put into the lessons and being funny and implementing those lessons throughout the day, beyond the class time. They will see this and they will learn and most importantly, they will retain all of the things they learn!

So, until next time!

Thank you so much for stopping by today, I hope you enjoyed today’s post! If you did, please let me know by giving this a like, comment, and share so others can join the fun!! Until next time!!

Thank you!

God Bless!

Happy Krafting!
