Hi! My name is Alishia and I am a KraftaholicMommy!
Today, was the kind of day that you could just take a glass of iced tea and sit somewhere under a tree, to crochet for hours. Thinking of that glass of sweet iced tea, a coaster would definitely be needed.
My sister-in-law has been redecorating her house and I wanted to give her a gift that would be a nice addition to the top of her end tables. So, I remembered a wonderful pattern written by Chandi of Expression Fiber Arts. I went to download the pattern and get started on her lovely crocheted coasters.
This pattern can be found in two locations; expressionfiberarts.com and the Expression Fiber Arts YouTube channel. The perk of using the website, the pattern is completely free to download. While on there, feel free to check out her other amazing patterns. Chandi definitely has amazing talent in coming up with the most beautiful patterns. If crochet is not your thing, she offers a great blog and beautiful knit patterns. This pattern name is called, Fancy Flower Coaster. It is written with the intentions of the crocheter using Fingering Weight yarn. Fingering weight is lace weight yarn. The crochet hook recommended for this pattern is the G hook.
Now, for several reasons, I will not be writing out exactly how to crochet this coaster. First, copy right issues. Second, I really would love for you to check out her website. Chandi has one of the most inspiring websites. I truly love visiting her site.
This pattern is very easy to follow. If you are new to crochet, you will be able to follow this pattern. If you run in to any issues, you have an amazing video tutorial to watch for reference. Now, for me I did notice that I am going to need to make a few adjustments.
First, using Fingering weight yarn, I did not care for the turn out. Not the overall look of the coaster, that is beautiful. It was due to my tension. I tend to be rather loose with my tension and it made the coaster far larger than the one that she made. Also, when I watched her video, she used a heavier weight yarn, making the project bigger and I really liked that. Now, using my same tension with the same size hook as suggested, I will probably achieve the look that I am going for. Also, a result from my tension, I noticed my coaster was considerably looser than Chandi’s.
Second, I used yarn I had on hand. I think using such a light color for a household with four kids under eleven is a bit ambitious. Let’s face it, kids are messy. Lord knows, my one boy is absolutely the messiest kid I know. He could go into NASA’s clean room and come out filthy. So, having four kids stains are bound to happen, darker colors will help keep that from being as noticeable. I noticed in preparation of posting this, the pictures show a bit discoloration in my yarn. This just adds another reason to use a different yarn.
The final thing I will be changing is how I finished off this coaster. The way I weaved my ends in, is bound to come loose. I will be going with a different method.
Those things mentioned above, are my issues. They are no way the issues of the pattern. Remember, when you start a new pattern, it isn’t the worst thing in the world to see room for improvement. I know that not every pattern I try will come out perfect the first time. By perfect, I mean perfect for me. This pattern is so easy and enjoyable to follow, that I am looking forward to working up a bunch of these beautiful coasters.
So, why did I decide to work on this pattern?
When I saw this pattern, I fell in love with the simplistic beauty in it. I fell in love with the possible colors and how flowers like these are gorgeous. Not to mention, this pattern works up so quickly. There are so many patterns out there for coasters, I have made so many over the years, but this one will look gorgeous sporting a nice mason jar.
Give this pattern a try and I promise you will love it. Also, feel free to browse Chandi’s amazing site. I know it seems weird to suggest that you visit another site, but there’s a reason for that. I have another site to show you too. 🙂
Starting off with Kati’s House, (katishouse.com) this fun site is a mommy blog and a wonderful source for recipes. Kati was amazing enough to mention me on her Facebook Page and I wanted to return the very sweet gesture.
The other reason for sharing these sites. I believe in telling people about amazing people. These two lovely ladies have so much to say and they should be heard. What they have to say is awesome!
I want to thank you so very much for stopping by my site today, it truly means a lot. I hope you enjoyed today’s post. If you did, feel free to give this a like or just let me know in the comments. Remember, I post every single day, so swing by tomorrow for some more KraftaholicMommy. 🙂 Feel free to share this site with your friends so they can join the fun too! Until next time,
